Brief introduction of Vascular dementia
Vascular dementia (VD) is the dementia caused by brain vascular diseases, mainly results from ischemic vascular disease.
Dementia and other deseases
Hypertension
Hypertension is common in China, mainly affects meddle-aged and elder people. Hypertension is a high risk factor of cerebral vascular diseases, and may result in vascular dementia in some cases
Cerebral arterial sclerosis
In patient with arterial sclerosis, lipoid substance deposits in the inner wall of arteries and forms so-called atheromatous plaque. The plaque may narrow vascular lumen, slow down blood flow and finally lead to insufficient brain blood supply and cerebral vascular disease happens.
Stroke Many diseases may cause dementia. Cerebral stroke is one of the risk factors of dementia. It was reported that 16%-26% elder patients (> 60 years old) will suffer dementia 3 months later after the onset of stroke. Stroke is not the only cause of Vascular dementia, some other diseases may lead to dementia as well.
